Hydrogen Car - How Do They Work?
One of
the good things about the gas prices rising across the world is
the fact that people are finally starting to recognize that
there may be a need for a hydrogen car. This car would be
fueled by an alternative fuel of hydrogen.
This car would run on what is
called a hydrogen fuel cell. These fuel cells are installed in
place of a gas tank. You would then fill this cell at a
hydrogen pump rather than the gas station.
Most all of the car
manufacturing companies in the world have a prototype hydrogen
car, and they all seem to run very well. Although the sticker
price would be a bit less than a regular gasoline powered car,
there is the problem of finding a hydrogen station to fill up
with. This is one set back that is keeping the hydrogen car out
of the populations garages.
There are thoughts of just
adding a hydrogen pump at your local gas station. However,
there aren't very many communities, especially the smaller
ones, that would have the money or space to accomplish this.
Never mind adding a full blown hydrogen station. The cost for
small communities would definitely outweigh the savings of
having a hydrogen car.
They are also having a minor
set back in getting the hydrogen cell to hold enough fuel to
make it worth while to own. This means that while the price
would be cheaper to fill it, you would be filling up much more
often. Some cells are only good for around 100 miles, while
others are only making it about 20 miles before needing to be
refueled. This makes long distance traveling a bit of a
problem, especially if no station is available.
To counter this refueling
problem, they are turning most of the hydrogen cars into a
hybrid hydrogen/gas car. This way you can use the hydrogen for
the hustle and bustle of stop and go driving, which used way
more fuel the highway driving, or switch over to the gas fuel
for longer distance driving, or when your hydrogen cell runs
dry. This would eliminate making those constant refueling needs
so much of a pain.
However, it turns out the need for an alternative fuel
source for our vehicles is needed immediately. With gas prices
rising and causing our food and utilities prices to rise as
well, offering a bit of comfort and stability to the world with
an alternative fuel would be a saving grace to the world's ever
growing population.
